Wow, we really got hit! Measurements in my part of the county were 21.0 to 22.5 inches -- all measured by NWS employees who, presumably, know how to do it correctly. So we got a
lot of snow!
The church service this morning -- which was not only the minister's last sermon for a few months but also the annual canvass -- was cancelled, which is going to cause a problem for the Finance Committee. But at least the dinner last night went on as scheduled. I'm so sorry I missed it -- I could have made it, snow-wise (although the trip home would have been rather scary), but I just wasn't feeling well. Now I'm worried if I'm going to be knocked out all day tomorrow from shoveling the front walk and digging out the car.
A teenager from across the street came over, snow brushes in hand, and asked if she could brush off my car. I asked how much she usually gets, and she said $10. Wanting to be the kind of neighbor I'd want my daughter to have if she were going around trying to earn some money I said okay, but I'm sorry I did. Ten dollars is a lot of money for me these days, and she did a fairly poor job -- something I could have done myself without too much effort in ten minutes. Paying $60 an hour to have the car brushed off is a little too pricey for me to be comfortable with, especially since all the side windows except the front seat were left covered with snow, and the entire front -- grille, headlights and all -- is still completely buried. Well, live and learn -- I'm going to say thanks but no thanks to her in the future.
Meanwhile she had to tromp up and down my front walk four times to come to the door twice, which will pack this heavy, wet snow hard and make shoveling the walk much more difficult. It's going to be hard to shovel anyway since this is not light, fluffy stuff you can just fling aside. I'm going to dig out a shovel-width path down the walk and hope for the best.
Unless I find myself feeling really ambitious while I'm out there I doubt I'll have the car out by tomorrow morning, so I'm going to have to postpone my lunch date with a friend. I have a small group ministry meeting in the afternoon, but I can get someone to pick me up for that so I'm not worried. I don't have any pressing need to drive anywhere for the next few days, so it doesn't really matter.
ADDED: I went out with the snow shovels. (I have two -- the plastic one is lighter and easier to manage, but doesn't get the last half inch or so; the metal one is heavier but scrapes the pavement well. So I use the plastic one for most of the shoveling, then get the metal one and scrape the last clingy layer off. They both have
ergonomic bent handles.) I got the walk cleaned off, not edge to edge but about 3/4 of its width. I shoveled the steppingstone path to the sidewalk on the side, and I shoveled around the car. I did the poorest job by the car, because I was tired and my back and wrist were starting to hurt by then, but as I said, I have no pressing need to get the car out for the next few days, so I'll just wait for what's left to melt, or work on it again tomorrow.
ADDED 7:52 pm: I just talked to someone about the group tomorrow, and it's all set that he'll pick me up, so I don't need to worry about having the car dug out by 1:00.
But after IM'ing with
momomom for awhile, and then having two phone calls in a row, I haven't eaten anything yet and I'm starving!
